An avid civil war buff, Charles has over the years amassed a considerable collection of these images. Marrying his twin passions of art and Civil War photography, Charles enlarges these pictures and, in a manner reminiscent of early photographers, paints over them with glazes of oil paint, enhancing the image with authentic color and period detail while retaining the immediacy of the original.In many cases, Charles has been able to determine the identity of his subject, and has researched their military service, pension and census records to divine as much information as he can about their personal history. The resulting painting constitutes a unique portrait, based upon research and creative inspiration, of a common soldier in our Civil War. Each painting, therefore, while based upon a version of the original photograph, is itself a contemporary work of artistic expression.
