The regiment, smartly attired in green sateen short jackets, gray pants with white stripes, was formed to defend the state against the invading army of William T. Sherman. In November, 1864, as Sherman laid waste to the region, the Attapulus Cavalry was reorganized as Company I, 11th Georgia Cavalry. Attached to General Joseph E. Johnson’s army, and mounted chiefly on mules, the 11th fought a losing struggle with the invaders until late April 1865, when it along with the rest of Johnson’s men, surrendered in North Carolina.
