The Palmetto Artilleryman
Oil on Paper 8 x 10" $200 Unidentified Confederate Cannoneer, poss. 15th South Carolina Heavy Artillery, C.S.A. The original ambrotype of this image surfaced at an Estate sale in Aiken, South Carolina. His Cap and coat were tinted red by the unknown photographer, indicating that he probably was in the artillery branch of the Confederate army. Given the location of the image, it is further possible that this steel-eyed Rebel cannoneer was a member of Company “A”, 15th South Carolina Heavy Artillery Battalion, which was formed with men from Aiken and nearby Edgefield Counties. The 15th served throughout the war, from 1861 until surrendered by General Joseph Johnson in late April 1865. It is likely that this image was taken at the start of the conflict, before the federal blockade of the South Carolina coast rendered photographic supplies and chemicals difficult to obtain. |
