Unidentified Union Soldiers in Camp

Two Federal “Pards” pose in front of a photographer’s painted backdrop of a camp scene. Each clenches a lit cigar in his mouth, and the soldier on the left clutches a flask of liquor, also sometimes known as “o’ be joyful.” The privates are wearing four button “sack coats,” issued by the United States army to be worn for casual or fatigue duty. Made of comfortable blue flannel, the “sack” quickly became the uniform of the common soldier of the Northern armies.
